Title 11, Chapter 110 of the Village Code requires persons and entities conducting, maintaining or operating a business, occupation or activity to obtain and display a valid business license. Businesses regulated by the Federal Government or State of Illinois are exempt from village licensing. Business licenses are issued on a calendar-year basis and expire December 31.
Business License Renewals
- NEW THIS YEAR! Business Licenses will be renewed through the Open Gov Permitting & Licensing platform. Begin by creating your Open Gov user account using a general business email address that will stay consistent from year-to-year. The email used will receive renewal notifications every fall so it is essential it does not belong to a personal email which may become inactive prior to the renewal season.
- Click on the Business License/Registration Application, which will take you to the application webpage. Select “Sign Up” to create your account. Prior to starting the application, we recommend reading the FAQ.
- Upon opening the application, you will be asked to select the business address. There is no need to verify or change the Property Owner Information that appears after selecting the Primary Location – simply scroll down and select ‘Next”.
- You will be asked to provide your current business account number. This was provided in a letter, sent to the Business’s mailing address on file, as well as an email, sent to the address on file.

The Certificate of Occupancy/Business License Application process is an electronic process only. Hard copy applications will no longer be processed at the Finance Counter.
- If the business has retail sales, an IL Certificate of Registration with Location Code: 016-0116-4-001 for Schaumburg, will be required as part of the online application process.
- Business license fees can be found in the village's Fee Schedule. The fee for business licenses issued after July 1 of any calendar year will be one-half of the annual fee.
Businesses Regulated by the State of Illinois
If a business license is obtained by State of Illinois (for example, Doctors, Accountants, Lawyers, Financial Institutions, etc.), your business must be REGISTERED in Schaumburg. A Business License/Registration Application must be completed and renewed annually with a copy of your state license as proof of licensing. No business license or receipt will be issued by the Village.
