Walk and Bike Roll to School Day Collage

Bike to School Day is a specially designated day designed to encourage parents and students to identify safe bicycling or walking routes to and from school.

When a school signs up for this event, the hope is to encourage participation that will sustain bicycling and walking habits beyond the one-day event. Bicycling and walking to school offer many health and environmental benefits for children, improves pedestrian safety, and helps to reduce traffic and congestion.

With assistance from each school and Parent Teacher Associations, the main goal is to demonstrate the benefits to the environment, health, and traffic congestion from bicycling and walking to school. Please visit Walk, Bike, & Roll to School for more information on biking and walking to school.  These biannual events encourage students to identify safe biking or walking routes to school and promotes sustainable healthy habits.

BikeSafetyQuiz Mini-Grant Program, courtesy of Ride Illinois

Ride Illinois, a statewide bicycle organization working with IDOT to improve the safety of cyclists and motorists on the road, has renewed funding for the Bicycle Safety Quiz Mini Grant. Quizzes are available in English and Spanish.

Thanks to IDOT’s Injury Prevention funding, Ride Illinois is reimbursing elementary schools $2 per student, for staff time to assign and use their free, interactive quiz-based "Child Bicyclist" BikeSafetyQuiz (BSQ) lesson as a 15-30 minute computer assignment.  The amount of the reimbursement mini grant is based on the number of students using BSQ from October 1, 2025 through September 15, 2026. Ride Illinois’ BSQ Child Bicyclist quiz, with content approved by the Illinois Secretary of State, is appropriate for 4th and 5th grade (or younger with adult help).

Elementary schools should complete the Ride Illinois' Mini-Grant Application to set up a quiz. After designated school official's complete this form, Ride Illinois will make a copy of the quiz tailored to the school and provide a link for students to use.  Ride Illinois will send a second link to a spreadsheet, where school officials can monitor student results.
