In 2012, voters passed a referendum authorizing the village to establish an electrical aggregation program to provide residents with a viable energy supply alternative to ComEd. In 2017, the village contracted with Dynegy Inc, to serve as the village’s supplier and, last year, extended this agreement through December 2021 at a rate of 7.487 ¢/kWh.
Given recent changes in the energy market and the impact of COVID-19, ComEd’s rate has been lower than anticipated in recent months. Dynegy has reduced its rate to 7.340 ¢/kWh through October 2020, however, this rate is still not as low as ComEd’s price to compare which is projected to be 6.473 ¢/kWh through September 2020. ComEd’s variable price to compare changes frequently and fluctuates by as much as +/- 0.5 cents/kWh each month due to their Purchased Electricity Adjustment. The village has put together a Fact Sheet which answers additional questions residents may have about the program.
Residents are under no obligation to participate and are free to opt out and opt back into the program at no cost. Switching suppliers will take one full billing cycle. If you wish to opt out, call Dynegy at 844-351-7691 or email them at DESCustCare@Dynegy.com.
Things to Remember:
This rate is for energy supply only. ComEd will continue to deliver electricity to your home or business and bill you for the same. This sample ComEd bill highlights and explains where the supply and delivery charges show up on your bill.
All residents are reminded to be careful of third party energy suppliers that solicit their services in-person or over the phone. These suppliers often offer incentives or lower rates in the short term in exchange for contracts with built-in rate increases and opt-out fees in the long term. No one from the village’s program will ever come to your door to ask you to switch to a new supplier. Anyone who does come to your door is not with the village's program.
The program is completely voluntary. In Illinois you have 3 choices for your electric supplier. You can remain supplied by ComEd and pay their monthly variable rates, you can shop on your own and choose a supplier, or you can participate in Schaumburg’s program.
